The interior design offers practicality and well-being – as demonstrated by the optional split panorama glass roof. The size of the glass is unparalleled in its class. When designing this car, the central problem was how to elevate driving pleasure to a new level while further reducing effort for the driver. To allow you to concentrate even more on the actual steering, the optional Active Cruise Control with a Stop & Go function measures the distance to the vehicles in front and automatically maintains a pre-selected gap between you. The optional Lane Change Warning system further enhances your comfort. It helps you to effortlessly stick to your lane, even on extended runs. Whenever you unintentionally approach the road markings, this system warns you in good time by causing the steering wheel to vibrate. The direct steering improves handling, while increasing the pleasure of driving on winding roads and making quick lane changes. Double-VANOS provides precise valve timing, whatever the engine speed, and optimises the amount of air/fuel mixture in the engine. The transmission conveys the driving force in a particularly efficient manner and is crucial to the vehicle’s unique driving dynamics. For a driving sensation that’s reminiscent of Formula 1, we engineered the optional automatic sports transmission which allows gears to be changed via shift paddles on the steering wheel or per transmission selector lever. Performance, power delivery and high revving are all inherent qualities of each and every BMW engine. For our six cylinder engines, we are committed to the in-line design concept and thanks to Double-VANOS variable camshaft control these engines achieve a perfect torque curve. And since Valvetronic enables infinitely variable valve lift control, these engines are able to deliver superior power combined with superb fuel economy. At the same time, they also embody the BMW philosophy of intelligent lightweight design made of aluminium and magnesium.
BMW 530i. This engine offers spontaneous power delivery. In conjunction with the double-VANOS variable camshaft control, the engine develops an impressive 200 kW (272 hp) which propels the vehicle from 0 to 100 kilometres in just 6.9 seconds. It reaches its maximum torque of 315 Nm at 2750 rpm and has a top speed of 250 km/h. Its fuel consumption averages 9.5 litres over 100 kilometres.
The intelligence of active safety. Always stay one step ahead. The new BMW 5 Series Touring promises unadulterated driving pleasure. Not only does it look great on the outside, it’s brimming with inner qualities, such as innovative systems which ensure active safety and take much of the stress out of driving. This can be seen in the perfectly poised chassis which offers the ultimate in suspension and traction. Not forgetting the outstanding deceleration values of the braking system, which still works like a dream even after several full braking manoeuvres. Or the highly sophisticated electronic suspension control system known as DSC. Dynamic Stability Control can detect an imminent unstable driving condition. The system immediately intervenes in the engine or brake management and ensures optimal traction, no matter what the driving situation. You will notice this when accelerating out of a tight bend, for example. Furthermore, DSC offers three additional functions. Braking Readiness, which helps to reduce the braking distance in emergency braking situations. The Dry Braking function optimises brake response in wet conditions by gently applying the brake linings to the brake discs. And finally, Fading Compensation, which maintains an excellent braking performance even when the brakes get extremely hot. Needless to say, a truly sophisticated and comprehensive safety concept also needs smaller features such as the Rain Sensor, which automatically activates the windscreen wipers, thereby counteracting poor visibility, or the Brake Force Display, which warns the vehicles behind you in particular braking scenarios. The interplay between all these safety features can be summed up in a single sentence – The new BMW 5 Series provides optimal support, no matter what.
In traffic, everyone has to look out for each other. Even your BMW. We at BMW interpret passive safety as making a concerted effort to minimise the potential consequences of an accident through the deployment of a whole package of intelligent safety systems. An exceptionally strong passenger cell, constructed using high-strength multi-phase steel, for example, gives those on board the largest possible survival space should an accident occur. In the event of a head-on or rear-end collision, specially designed deformation zones ensure the safe absorption of deformation forces and mean that the body even escapes damage up to a defined collision speed. In our quest to implement state-of-the-art passenger protection, highly-sensitive sensors, which network with the electronic on-board bus system, are fitted throughout the vehicle, Such sensors activate exactly the required safety feature – be that an airbag or belt tensioner, for example – at exactly the right time and with the correct force.
Should an accident occur, the new BMW 5 Series has even more intelligent solutions in its armoury of safety features: For example, the hazard warning and interior lights are switched on automatically, and the central locking mechanism on the doors is deactivated. Thanks to the navigation systems Business or Professional and the BMW TeleAssist telematics service, an emergency call is automatically transmitted and the vehicle’s position is determined in the event of an accident.
